Waste producers must assess and classify waste soils based on contamination levels. Our Team can assist with all aspects of this.
- Producing a WM3 compliant sampling plan and sending for analysis at a UKAS laboratory using MCERTS testing, to assess any concentration of contaminants. This will determine the source (e.g., hydrocarbons, heavy metals)
- Determining if the soil contains any hazardous properties, using WM3 guidelines for waste classification
- Assigning the correct EWC code depending on whether the soil is classified as non-hazardous, or hazardous based on the above test results.
Every waste type must be assigned a specific EWC, which helps classify and manage the soil. A WAC test cannot determine if the waste is hazardous, or not. It will only help in determining what class of landfill the soil can be disposed at. * ‘inert’ is not a classification.
Hazardous soils from a construction site may be classified under EWC 17 05 03*, while non-hazardous soils from a construction site could fall under EWC 17 05 04.
